Mexican Silver Libertad coins debuted in 1982 with just the 1 oz option available. The coins have had the same weight and purity from that first year, though the image of Winged Victory featured on the obverse was modernized in the mid-1990s. The initial design from 1982 to 1995 was similar to that of the gold Centenario coin released in 1921 by the Mexican Mint.
Beginning with the 1996 issue of Mexican Silver Libertads, the Mexican Mint rolled out a modified design of Winged Victory. This depiction is more accurately based on the statue of Winged Victory found atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. Both the gold Centenario coin with her likeness and the statue on the column debuted in 1921 as the nation marked 100 years of independence from Spain.
On the obverse of these 2019 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins is the image of Winged Victory in slight left-profile relief. She holds out her right hand with a crown wreath clutched in it and her left hand is held behind her figure with the broken chains of servitude. Inscriptions include the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, along with an “OM” mint mark from the Mexican Mint.
The reverse of 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coins differs from its fractional-weight counterparts in one significant way. While all Silver Libertad coins feature the modern Mexican coat of arms in the center, only the 1 oz and larger coins in this collection have a ring bearing 10 historical versions of the same seal around the design field.
